Bar Jacks Fishing Report – April 27

Spring Bite Still Rolling in South Florida

Hello and welcome back to another Bar Jacks Fishing Report for April 27. The weather has been good recently, this weekend was dead flat and the fishing was awesome. Spring is in full swing offshore, and a few key bites are really standing out right now.

Sailfish

The sailfish bite has been okay. There are definitely fish out there, but it hasn't been red hot this week. A few sailfish have been caught on kites in the 100–300 foot range using goggle eyes and threadfin herring. The bite is still around, just not as consistent as earlier in the season.

Tuna

The tuna bite is unreal right now! It's red hot in the 100–400 foot range. We've been catching tuna almost every trip over the last few weeks. Trolling the Bar Jacks Tuna Striker around the cargo ships off Fort Lauderdale has been the recipe for success with blackfin tuna. Even better, jumbo tuna are starting to push through, with some really nice fish showing up on both kites and the troll. Best times of day are early morning and late afternoon, and those windows have been producing consistently.

Wahoo

The wahoo bite has also been great. Early morning runs have produced some nice fish in the 30–50 pound range. Trolling planers over structure in the 100–375 foot range remains the best way to target them. If you get out early, you've got a real shot at getting one in the box.

Mahi

The mahi bite is on a heater right now. There have been massive weedlines in about 700 feet of water absolutely loaded with fish. Yesterday we ran multiple weedlines and found three different schools of mahi. There are a lot of schoolies, but if you put in the time and work each school, you can still pick off a few keepers for dinner.

Kingfish

The kingfish bite has been solid, not red hot yet, but improving as we move deeper into spring. Best depth is 70–150 feet. Kite fishing with goggle eyes, sardines, and threadfin herring is the most effective way to target them. You can also catch a few on the troll, but if you're specifically targeting kings, kite fishing is the way to go.

Bottom Fishing

Bottom fishing is about to get a big boost — grouper and tilefish season officially opens May 1st. That means future reports will start dialing in spots, depths, and baits for grouper and tilefish. Blueline tilefish and grouper are always a great fallback when trolling is slow. Overall, the spring run is in full swing offshore, and tuna and mahi are leading the charge right now.
